Participants consumed either 40 grams of whey protein alone or 40 grams of whey protein plus 3 grams of calcium HMB.
Both conditions increased muscle protein synthesis after eating. Among the older women in the study, adding HMB further increased the muscle protein synthesis response compared with protein alone.¹
Researchers also observed greater suppression of muscle protein breakdown during part of the post-meal period when HMB was added.¹
