HMB can be integral part of healthy aging discussion, supplier says.

As the discussion of how to maintain health as we age continues, more and more talk about HMB as a solution to help maintain muscle mass has become a popular topic.

Addressing aging at a cellular level

Age we age, our cells become more senescent.  Senescence is the process in which a cell ages and permanently stops dividing but does not die.

Over time, large numbers of old cells can build up in tissues throughout the body.  These cells remain active but can release harmful substances that can cause inflammation or damage to nearby healthy cells.

Nicotinamide riboside has been a prominent ingredient in discussion of healthy aging, but Shawn Baier, COO of Metabolic Technologies, says HMB should be a part of that conversation too.

The Building Blocks to Muscle Health

To maintain muscle mass, most people think that you need more protein intake, especially as you age.  Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

When people are young, their protein building / protein breakdown system is in balance.  But as people age, this balance can get out of whack.  Muscle doesn’t build as easily and tends to break down quicker.

Baier explained it as a bucket with a hole in the bottom.  If the hole is too big, it’s harder to maintain the level of water in the bucket as you pour more in, much less get that level to go higher.

This is where HMB plays an integral role in muscle health.  HMB works by increasing protein synthesis while also decreasing protein breakdown.  It’s a signal to your cells to build muscle instead of tearing it down.
