State Basketball

I have had an exciting March watching my daughter Lizzy and the Minnesota Girls Basketball team.  The month started out with them completing a great run by winning the Section Championships, and moving on to the Minnesota Class A High School State Tournament.  The girls won their first game at Williams Arena “The Barn”, which is home to the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  The semifinal round was played at the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Target Center.  Unfortunately, the girls could not pull off the victory, but bounced back with a great performance the next day for 3rd place.  Very proud to watch my daughter and her teammates play throughout the season.  I have worked with most of the girls on the team in the Minnesota weight room for several years.  It was fun to see all of them do so well!

University Coaching

I have been really busy away from Jackals Gym with my coaching activities at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU).  We are in the middle of our spring strength training with the Volleyball Team.  We train two days a week and incorporate a combination of mobility, plyometrics, Olympic weightlifting, bench press, box squats, deadlifts and assistance work.  Our training focuses on developing speed, strength, agility, injury prevention and vertical jump. We have also started our off-season training with SMSU wrestling.  This is a training cycle three days a week, which follows real close to my standard 8-week template. Each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday lifting sessions in the gym are followed by sandbag carries, sled work and farmers walks.  We try to be creative with this training and mix it up as much as possible to continue to make it a challenge.

Training Progress

With the girls basketball team competing at the State Championships I was not able to compete in the Minnesota State Powerlifting meet last weekend, but my winter training cycle finished very strong.  I had been training very heavy for an extended period so I decided to deload for a couple weeks, and then start over with a new training cycle. Basically my body is telling me I need a little rest, but I look forward to lifting heavier in the weeks to come.  I will plan my training to compete in another meet in the near future.
