‘Sitting is the New Smoking’
I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase, but how are you supposed to implement this when you have an office job? Whether you’re working from home or in an office, Team myHMB ambassador Philita Scholz gives some creative tips to help you get out of your seat throughout the day.
As I’ve delved farther into my professional career, I’ve picked up more working hours and that means more time sitting at a desk. A standing desk is not an option for me, and I’m sure many people have heard about the negative impact that sitting for long periods of time has on your overall health. I’ve had to get creative on methods to avoid this trap and get up and move throughout the day.
1. Drink your fluids
First and foremost, and perhaps the most important tip, is to drink enough fluids during the day so that you HAVE to get up and walk to the restroom. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one around me who is up every hour for this reason!
2. Refill often
Something else I started doing is bringing a smaller water bottle. Sure, it’s convenient to not refill it multiple times, but it gets you up and moving!
3. Take the long route
A few other things I do daily are, take the long route on my way to anywhere, take the stairs, not just in and out of the office daily, but I go to restrooms on a different floor than mine. I also take a small walk in the building during my lunch break.
It’s challenging some days because I work 10+ hours but knowing how hard a sedentary lifestyle is on your body makes it even more important to intentionally focus on moving every hour for at least 5 minutes.
Good luck to you all and get moving.
